Atsushi Ohma is a deputy general manager of research division at Nissan Motor Co., Ltd. He graduated from Waseda University in 1995 with B.D, and Tokyo Institute of Technology in 2010 and received Ph.D. of mechanical control and system engineering. In the thesis, he studied oxygen reduction reaction mechanism with NafionĀ® film for proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) by both electrochemical measurement of electrocatalyst and energy-based reactivity analysis using DFT calculation. He had been a visiting associate professor of Green Energy Conversion Science and Technology, University of Yamanashi since 2012 to 2020. He is also a visiting professor at School of Vehicle and Mobility, Tsinghua University since 2019.
He enrolled Toshiba Co., Ltd in 1995 and had developed PEMFC stack for stationary use for 7 years. Then he changed his jobs from Toshiba to Nissan in 2002 to research and develop PEMFC stack, membrane electrode assembly (MEA), and catalyst layers/electrocatalyst. Since 2016 he has also been in charge of fundamental research for advanced Li-ion battery cells, electrodes, and materials. The main focus of his research is performance and durability analysis of the cell/electrodes/chemistry from both experimental and modeling aspects by coupling electrochemical reaction and mass transport phenomena, and mechanical expansion/contraction behavior. While keeping the research activity, he had been in charge of advanced engineering at Nissan working on the Li-ion battery cells, modules, and pack for future EVs since 2020 to 2022. He has been also in charge of the international standardization on secondary Lithium-ion cells for the propulsion of electric road vehicles since 2022, and a convenor of IEC/TC21/JWG69Li.
